Why dogs lick people

 Most experts agree there's probably a combination of reasons for dogs licking people. First of all there is a good chance your dog is licking you to show their affection. Licking is a natural action for dogs. They learned it from the grooming and affection their mothers gave them as puppies.

 Dogs will also lick you to simply get your attention. It often starts as a sign of affection, but then it's reinforced by a person's reaction: laughing, smiling, or petting.

 Dogs have licking coded in their DNA from canids, such as wolves. When the mother returned from hunting, the cubs licked her until they vomited and thus obtained food.

 Another reason dogs lick you is to see how you taste. Once that dog gets to licking you, they might realize you have an intriguing salty flavour. Dogs love anything that has an interesting taste. Plus, licking is a way for your dog to explore their world.

    I remember a dog vigorously licking body balm off my calves. It must have tasted great but can't have been that healthy.

Even though this formula has been around for a surprisingly long time, the reality is not so cut-and-dried. What dogs dream about

Dr Deirdre Barrett, a clinical and evolutionary psychologist at Harvard Medical School, has released a study about what dogs dream about. She said it is possible that dogs dream just like humans about their everyday experiences, so there are a lot of chances they are dreaming about their owners. Although there's no way to know for sure what a dog is dreaming about, Dr Barrett says it is likely they are dreaming about running when their paws or legs begin to twitch or interacting with another dog or human when they start barking. She thinks that dogs have the same cycles of sleep as humans - light, deep and REM sleep stages. Dr Barrett says owners can try to improve their dog's dreams by exposing them to "happy daytime experiences" and providing them with a safe and comfortable environment to rest in the night. Selective breeding has occurred for thousands of years in numerous domesticated species, not just dogs. Our canine friends first developed breeding for specific behavioral traits, not conformational traits.
